Is It Time to Change the Locks?

If you’ve lived in Winchester for a while, you know that our homes, like the city itself, have a lot of history. That’s part of the charm, but “old” isn’t always a good thing when it comes to your door locks. If you’ve just moved, lost a key, or seen that your front door is starting to stick, it might be time to think about changing the lock.

I see this kind of thing all the time as a locksmith in Winchester. A customer in Fulflood called recently because her key was starting to feel loose in the cylinder. She thought it was nothing, but a quick look showed that the mechanism was worn out and about to break. If she had turned the key once on a cold night, she would have been locked out for sure. A quick change of the lock fixed the problem before it got worse.

Is It Time to Change The Locks?

There are a few clear signs :

  • You just moved to a new place. You never know who still has a key from the last owner.
  • Your lock feels rough or stiff. This is a common sign that the mechanism is wearing out.
  • Someone took or lost your keys. You shouldn’t take the chance, even if you think they’ll show up.

You want to make security better. Newer anti-snap locks are much better at keeping people out than older ones.

Customers sometimes hesitate because they think if they change the locks it will be expensive or take a long time. Most jobs around Winchester actually take less than an hour, and I have all the common lock types in my van. It’s usually easy to fix, whether it’s a traditional mortice lock in St Cross or a UPVC door in Weeke.

A Little Change That Makes You Feel Better

Your locks are the first thing that keeps your home and family safe. Leaving a window half open is like having a lock that is old or worn out. Getting a new key is just one part of replacing it; you also need to feel safe when you turn that key every night.

If you’re not sure if your locks need to be changed, I’m always happy to come by and check them out for free. I’m a local Winchester locksmith who will give you honest advice.

A little work now could save you from being locked out at midnight later.
