How to Replace a uPVC Door Lock
How to Replace a uPVC Lock – Winchester Advice from a Local Locksmith
I get asked this one a lot — usually over the phone or while I’m stood at someone’s doorstep with a cup of tea in one hand and an old euro cylinder in the other:
“Can I just change the uPVC Door Lock myself?”
Truth is — yes, you can. But whether it goes smoothly depends on your door, your tools, and how many surprises are hiding behind the handles.
Here’s the short version:
What You’ll Need:
-
A screwdriver
-
A tape measure
-
A like-for-like replacement euro cylinder (don’t guess — measure properly!)
Step-by-Step:
-
Open the door (sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised…).
-
Unscrew the main fixing bolt – it’s the long one on the side edge of the door.
-
Turn the key slightly while pulling – this lines up the cam and lets the old lock slide out.
-
Slot in the new uPVC Door Lock, screw it in, test with the key before closing the door.
That’s it, in theory.
But here’s the catch:
▶ Sometimes the old lock won’t budge.
▶ Sometimes it’s not the lock at fault — it’s the alignment or worn gearbox.
▶ And sometimes people force it… and end up with a call-out anyway (often sheepishly, I must add).
So yes, if you’re handy and confident, it’s doable. But if you want it done properly, without forcing, guesswork, or spare parts from that drawer in the garage — I’m here.
