The Call-Out
A woman from St. Cross, Winchester, called me a few days ago because she had locked herself out while letting her dog out into the garden. You know how it is: one minute you’re enjoying the cool morning air, and the next you realise the door has clicked shut behind you and the keys are still inside, looking at you from the kitchen counter as if they were laughing at you.
It happens to the best of us.
She sounded stressed, and with the weather acting like it always does in Winchester—grey skies and a stubborn drizzle—she wanted to get back inside right away.
When you get there
I got there in less than half an hour, which is always nice because I know the shortcuts through Fulflood and St. Cross instead of sitting in traffic in the city centre. She was on the porch, wrapped in a robe and looking like she was ready for a cup of tea and some heat.
I said I would try a Non Destructive entry instead of going straight for a drill, which is always the goal. People don’t want to pay for a new lock if they don’t have to.
The Way
I carefully worked on the lock with a tension wrench and a pick set. Modern composite doors and UPVC mechanisms can be a little temperamental, especially if the weather changes and the doors swells or shrinks. But with a steady hand and some patience, you can fix them, no problem.
The latch made a satisfying soft click and the door opened in less than eight minutes. No fuss, no scratches, no damahge and no drilling.
Result
The customer went back inside right away, happy, thankful, and ready to warm up. No damage to her hardware, so she doesn’t have to buy new ones. Just a clean, non-destructive entry, which is exactly how it should be done.
She said she almost called one of those national call centre locksmiths, but she chose to go “local and independent” instead. It’s always good to hear, and it really does matter.
Why this is important
Not every locksmith tries to get in without breaking anything first. Some people go straight to drilling, which can make a simple job cost more than it needs to.
Whenever I possibly can, I’ll always (in the first instance) try to get you back inside without damage to the lock. It is:
Less expensive
Most of the time, faster
Nicer to your door and tools
The right way
If you get locked out in Winchester, Weeke, Fulflood, Kings Worthy, Badger Farm, or a nearby area, let me know. I’ll get you back in safely and without any trouble or damage.
