Door Knobs and Door Handles – A Local Guide from Locksmith Winchester
Loose door knob? Wobbly handle? You’re not alone. It’s one of those little household issues that tends to creep up over time—and it’s something we come across regularly in homes across Winchester.
Luckily, in most cases, it’s an easy fix. But knowing what kind of door knob or handle you’ve got can make a big difference in how you go about sorting it.
Two Main Types: Exposed or Hidden Screws
You’ll usually find one of two types of fittings:
1. Exposed Screw Door Knobs or Handles
These are common on older doors. The screws are visible on the plate, and you can often see how the mechanism works just by taking a quick look. The benefit here is that you can usually tighten things up without much fuss.
2. Hidden Screw Door Knobs or Handles
These are a bit more modern. They look a bit sleeker because the screws are tucked away behind a cover plate. They do the job just as well, but can be a bit trickier to fix if they come loose. You’ll need to remove the cover before you can get to the screws underneath.
Can You Fix It Yourself?
Sometimes, yes. If you’re confident with a screwdriver and know your way around a toolkit, you might be able to sort it yourself—especially if it’s one with visible screws.
But not everyone’s comfortable fiddling about with door hardware—and that’s completely fine. The last thing you want to do is force something and make it worse. A slipped screwdriver can scratch your door, or worse, damage the internal mechanism.
When It’s Best to Call Someone
If it’s not sitting right, or you’ve tried tightening it and it still feels loose, it’s probably time to call someone in. It might be more than just a loose screw—sometimes it’s the internal spindle that’s worn out, or a lock case that’s seen better days.
