Garage Door Locks

Garage Door Locks – Worth a Second Look?

Hi, Dougie here from Locksmith Winchester. Just wanted to chat about something that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves when it comes to home security — humble garage door Locks.

It might not seem like the most obvious entry point, but I’ve seen my fair share of break-ins across Winchester where the garage was the way in. Whether you’ve got tools in there, bikes, or it’s got a connecting door into the house, it’s well worth checking the lock situation.

Garage Doors – An Easy Target?

Winchester’s a lovely place to live — we’ve got some cracking neighbourhoods — but no area is completely crime-free. Opportunists are always on the lookout for easy pickings, and a weak garage door lock can be just that.

The trouble is, a lot of folks haven’t checked their garage locks in years. Maybe it’s still the original one from when the house was built, or maybe it’s just gone a bit rusty and stiff. Either way, it doesn’t take much for someone to force their way in if the lock isn’t up to scratch.

A Look at the Garage Locks I Often Fit Around Winchester

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to garage doors, but here are a few options I regularly recommend and fit around town:

T-Handle Locks

These are pretty common on older up-and-over garage doors. They’ve got a T-shaped handle on the outside and work with a key. Not bad when they’re in good condition — but once they start to wear out, they’re easier to force than you might think.

Slide Bolts

These are fitted on the inside of the garage and slide into the frame or ground. They add a nice bit of strength and work well alongside your main lock. Solid and reliable — no fancy tech needed.

Garage Door Defenders

These are brilliant for garages that face out onto driveways or roads. It’s a chunky bracket fixed to the ground in front of the door, stopping it from opening even if the main lock is tampered with. Big bonus: they look tough, and that alone can put someone off.

Smart Locks and Electric Options

If you’re into gadgets or have an electric garage door already, there are some smart lock options out there — keypads, remotes, even phone-controlled systems. They’re not for everyone, but they’re handy and more secure than they used to be.

When’s the Right Time to Check Your Garage Lock?

If you’re not sure whether your garage lock’s doing its job, here are a few signs it might be time to give it a look:

  • The lock’s gone stiff, loose or just feels a bit dodgy
  • You’re not sure who’s got spare keys anymore
  • It’s been years since it was last looked at
  • You’ve noticed someone snooping around the area
  • There’s visible damage or rust on the lock or handle

Even if you’re not sure, I’m always happy to come and have a quick look and let you know if it’s worth upgrading.
